Editorial Review:

Product Description:
Stars Richard Widmark, Charles Farrell, Francis L. Sullivan, Gene Tierney, Googie Withers, Herbert Lom, Hugh Marlowe, Mike Mazurki, Stanislaus Zbyszko Film Credits Samuel G. Engel Producer Jo Eisinger Screenwriter Mutz Greenbaum Director of Photography Nick DeMaggio Editor Sidney Stone Editor Description In NIGHT AND THE CITY, director Jules Dassin brilliantly fuses two styles of filmmaking, crossing the expressionist lighting and framing of film noir with the almost documentary location shooting he used for THE NAKED CITY (1948). Dassin treats NIGHT AND THE CITY?s central London locations as strange exotic places. As the movie opens, it is nighttime and small-time hood Harry Fabian (Richard Widmark) is running from almost unseen pursuers. Harry crosses in front of St. Paul's Cathedral, and Dassin shows this familiar tourist sight from a very high angle, then immediately juxtaposes a shot of Harry escaping through bombed-out ruins. While Dassin and director of photography Max Greene shoot exteriors from high angles or from cramped doorways, they shoot interiors from low angles catching their actors against heavily contrasted backgrounds. The result is a movie full of diamond-sharp, angst-ridden visuals.NIGHT AND THE CITY is built round the dynamic febrile performance of Richard Widmark as the constantly scheming, ever-overreaching Harry. Herbert Lom is brilliant as the Greek who ruthlessly controls wrestling in London. Francis L. Sullivan, huge and slow moving, exudes menace as nightclub owner Phil Nosseross. And Googie Withers is very striking as Nosseross's smart but desperate wife.

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - this is what film noir is all about, isn't it?
NIGHT AND THE CITY...RIGHT?
almost like macbeth in nature, richard widmark makes choices in his life that can ultimately lead to only one conclusion...along the way are a loyal but weary girlfriend, shady husband and wife business partners, and a professional wrestler living glory days past his prime...standing in widmark's path to riches is the underworld organization....but it's the war torn city of london at night that takes center stage in dassin's shakespearean-like tragedy, which is certainly one of the best film noir's ever made.
(want to save yourself 20-30 bucks..buy the OOP factory original 20th century fox vhs instead of the criterion dvd...the videotape is clear, complete, and captioned.)

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - An excellent, underrated 1950s film noir
Another fine film noir by blacklisted American director Jules Dassin... The plot involves a small-time street hustler in London who tries to make his mark as a fight promoter, only to find organized crime's stranglehold over the wrestling business tougher to overcome that he imagined. Richard Widmark's hoodlum, Harry Fabian, is a fast-talking small-fry, an ambitious, overreaching punk who undoes himself at every turn, and digs himself in deeper and deeper with each confrontation against the city's kingpin. Fabian has a lot in common with Tony Curtis' Sidney Falco character in "Sweet Smell Of Success." This flick doesn't share the shrill, hysterical tone of that later film, and it's the seeming cool of the characters -- and our awareness of what a loser Fabian actually is -- that give this ...
