This Yankee Flipper squirrel-proof feeder is the ultimate feeder for keeping your feathered friends fed, and the furred fiends hungry. Let's talk about the basics first. The sturdy polycarbonate feeding chamber is a whopping 4-3/4 inches in diameter and 21 inches long, giving you a break between refills--and ensuring that squirrels can't hang down from the top to reach seed. The four feeding chambers are easily accessible via the perch ring, and the interior of the chamber is designed to direct seed into the seed ports.

Now, for the fun stuff: The birdfeeder features an encased motor and rechargeable (and replaceable) batteries. When you receive the feeder, simply charge the batteries overnight, hang the feeder from its looped bail wire, and prepare to be amazed (and entertained!). The motor is connected to the weight activated perch ring--birds will not set it off, even larger species like woodpeckers and cardinals. - Very poor, expensive birdfeeder choice.
I recently purchased the Yankee Flipper from a local English Gardens store. First of all I'd like to say I'm an avid birder. First, this birdfeeder might be appealing to the eyes. A beautiful droll yankees, 5 pound capacity tube feeder. Then come the problems. There has been a lot of Mourning Doves, and Pigeons being able to sit on the perch ring, and they belong on the ground. They take up too much room and no other birds can feed. Squirrels can sit on it too once the battery is dead. Secondly, the very, very poor way this feeder was designed. Supposedly, "the seed flows freely to the four feeder ports." Well, it doesn't. It gets stuck in there time and time again. You have to bang on the feeder to get it to unclump and go down into the ports. Another thing about the feeder ports is that the ... Read More

- Feh - unpopular with cardinals - dumps seed...
I don't know about this feeder - seems I'm now roaring through even more seed, with tons of pigeons, squirrels underneath the feeder (not on it though - suddenly 6 or 8 inches of seed will disappear - I think it dumps seed on the ground with the wind.

Also, my cardinals and other bright and interesting birds, don't appear to like the feeder. Small sparrows, pigeons and squirrels love it. Maybe I'll go back to having a squirrel acrobatically nabbing food, but use less seed, and get my pretty birds back...

I am delighted with this bird feeder. My Mother has had one for years with great success.I have not seen any squirrels eating at mine and it has been filled a week and is only half empty. The birds are waiting in line to eat at it. I even saw a pretty big woodpecker at it yesterday. I was afraid he would get flipped but he ate at ease if upside down style ala woodpecker. It is great to have the birds and not have to fill up the feeded every other day. My indoor cat appreciates it too!

I debated if I should spend this amount of money on a silly bird feeder. So after thinking about how much I spend on seed and also how much pleasure we get from watching the variety of birds we have here....I decided it was worth the money.

Now to be fair the squirrels aren't starving. I've learned to place the bird feeder a fair distance from the trunk of the tree or they just reach for it and a hand full of seed is twirled to the ground each time. Seems they do just fine with what's landed but by placing it further from their reach the squirrel must 'take a ride' on the spinning wheel. Again, they eat what's on the ground and there's enough left for the many birds that feed from it.

- Stripped gears in spinner = expensive waste of money
This feeder violates a basic law of engineering: simpler is better. Not long after installing this pricey toy in my backyard, the gears in the spinning mechanism gave out. My conclusion was that they were stripped, although I did not take it apart to confirm that diagnosis. All I know is that the spinning mechanism stopped working. I could have shipped the unit back for repair or replacement, but who needs the hassle? My advice: stick with a feeder with no moving parts that also does not require charging. I use two Droll Yankees tube feeders hanging from a dual arm post equipped with a torpedo squirrel guard. Located at least 8 feet from the nearest tree, this set-up has completely eliminated my squirrel problem. Simple and effective.
