Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:
Three high school students find themselves drawn into a plot to turn humans into metamorphic monsters or "Zoanoids" in this 1989 OAV, based on Yoshiki Takaya's manga. Sho Fukamachi finds a lost "control metal" that transforms him into the super-warrior Guyver via a mecha suit derived from alien DNA. With his friends Tetsuro and Mizuki and the mysterious Guyver III, Sho fights an increasingly nasty series of Zoanoids created by the Chronos corporation: hands get ripped off, holes are blown and punched through bodies, and blood sprays everywhere. The character designs recall Ronin Warriors (1989), and the plot of a sinister corporation trying to take over the world through illegal bio-technical experiments has become a standard in the intervening years. Two live-action films were also based on Guyver. (Rated 13 and older but more appropriate for 15 and older: violence, grotesque imagery, profanity, brief nudity) --Charles Solomon

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Give and Take.
All in all, the DVDs are BAD my friends. The opening sequence is completely cut from the episodes, and replaced with this awful clip sequence of cuts from variouse episodes. It's not even a song, and it just makes you want to cringe. To make it worse, the Chapter cuts are done so badly, you can't even skip the bad opening without cutting in a quarter of the way through the episode. And the extra features are minimal if any.

But, all in all, if this is the only way to GET Guyver on DVD, then it is a sacrifice that must be made. Aside from the few minor edits to the actual anime, it's still all there (even if you have to go looking through the extra features for episode 12.) If you don't want to keep rewinding through three episodes on your collection of 4 low quality VHSs, get it. ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A dream come true
Back then, in 1994, I only had the second episode on VHS. I also had the second movie, which I thought was one of the greatest movies with the greatest fight scenes. Years later, at a local store, I was just looking around, not planning to buy jack. Then, SMACK! It was right there in my face. The actual Guyver anime. I thought it was only a single episode, so I looked at the back. OMG! Six holy episodes! Not as planned, I begged to my parents if I could buy it. At home, I watched through the whole DVD only skipping the theme songs before every episode (which is pretty annoying). A week later, deja vu, only it was Vol. 2. Trust me, you'll go to heaven if you see this! Listen, you'll know it's cool after I say this: "He's immortal! One time, he dies for getting his control metal jacked. Next episode, ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - a cool cartoon but not a masterpiece
Guyver is about a boy named Sho Fukamachi who accidently comes across one of three units known as the guyvers unbeknownst to him the evil chronos corporation and it's army of alienic bio weapons known as the zoanoids are in pursuit. The guyver is the most powerful of zoanoids chronos lost when a rogue zoanoid steals them and chronos will do anything to retrieve the guyver units. It is a good action packed cartoon one that is fun to watch on a saturday afternoon it is rather violent but not so much so that it takes away from the story. I liked it because the action and characters were awesome and the plot was in my opinion rather innovative. This is a must see for true anime fans.

When I was a wee little 4th grader, I discovered this gem at a local blockbuster. This series is just fraught with gore. Episode 5, "The Death of Guyver", to me still has one of anime's goriest moments when we see Sho and Enzyme fight (severed/bitten off limbs, a fragmented head, a brutal impaling & coughing up a crap load of blood, and overload after Sho's control metal is ripped out). Anywhom, this series has a cool plot that is unique enough to not fall under average. An ancient race of people many years ago created 3 guyver units that grant their users the power of the bio booster armor. Sho and his friend Tetsuo are walking in the forest after school as a huge explosion occurs. Out comes a guyver unit and Sho ends up bonding with it. The Chronos company had been trying to retrieve the guyver ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - "Ahhhh! It's going inside of me!"
This is a really good anime! OK, Lemme tell ya how Sho becomes Guyver 1:
First, he finishes school and hangs out with his best friend. Then, an explosion occurs and the Guyver unit falls in the grass. Sho takes a closer look and it explodes right in front of his face! His best friend is just standing there surprised while Sho is screaming in pain. he falls in a lake and never comes back...for the time being. Then, Sho's friend is attacked by a Zoanoid. BAM! The lake explodes. The Guyver is in the steam. The rest is a blood-messed fight.
It looks good, sounds good, and IS good.
