Editorial Review:

Product Description:
A recruit of the future goes through the toughest boot camp in the universe and into battle with the Terran Mobile Infantry against humankind's most frightening enemy. Reissue.

Amazon.com Review:
Juan Rico signed up with the Federal Service on a lark, but despite the hardships and rigorous training, he finds himself determined to make it as a cap trooper. In boot camp he will learn how to become a soldier, but when he graduates and war comes (as it always does for soldiers), he will learn why he is a soldier. Many consider this Hugo Award winner to be Robert Heinlein's finest work, and with good reason. Forget the battle scenes and high-tech weapons (though this novel has them)--this is Heinlein at the top of his game talking people and politics.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - I am very satisfied
The seller was very fast in getting this book to me. It was in great condition. I would definitely buy from them again.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A Morality Tale on the Responsibilities of Citizenship
STARSHIP TROOPERS takes place in Earth's distant future. All the countries we know today disintegrated, and Earth was reorganized into a Terran Federation. In this federation only citizens have the right to vote, and only veterans can be citizens. The book itself is about Johnnie Rico, an infantry soldier. The reader follows Johnnie from high school to boot camp to war against "bugs," aliens with a collective mind.

The book has a good deal of action, but it's more interesting for its political philosophy. It's controversial because it's hard to tell how much of this military statism Heinlein was endorsing. The message I got was that Heinlein wanted his reader to think carefully about the responsibilities that come with citizenship and not just dwell on the benefits.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The future Sparta-style.
This book is very political laying out the case for personal responsibility and the individuals responsibility to their community. Heinlein posits that citizens (who have the right to vote) are only made by sacrificing something for the common good (their service). From the perspective of a shock trooper (the protagonist) this has a very Spartan like sense to it.

Taken with Ayn Rands "Atlas Shrugged" or "The Fountainhead" you can get a pretty good sense of the philosophy of objectivism from fiction. Is that philosophy fascist? I don't think so. Is it liberal, definitely not.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent reading and much better than the movie.
"Starship Troopers" by Robert Heinlein is an excellent science fiction book. The book is different and better than the movie that was made from it. The main character, Johnnie Rico, is a bit of a surprise. Here is a hero, who is Hispanic. That was somewhat unusual for American fiction of the times. The story is centered more on the times when Johnnie is not on an active military mission. It is more about what goes on in Johnnie's head than about the shoot-em-up action scenes of the movie.

Heinlein plays the "What if . . ." game and changes the rules of our current world by a good amount. "What if" our culture did not get pacifist and hippy? "What if" it got more centered on patriotism and duty than it did after Vietnam? When young, Heinlein started a naval career. Due to ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Deeper than you think
More a sociopolitical drama than a space war, this story allows the reader to experience what joining the military of the future could be like.

Don't judge it by the movie, which was fun in a kitschy way. This is interesting, thought provoking stuff.
