Editorial Review:

Product Description:
George MacDonald Fraser's famous Flashman series appears for the first time in audio book with an exciting new series style, ready to please his legions of old fans and attract armies of new ones. The Flashman Papers 1839-1842 Volume One Flashman, soldier, duellist, lover, imposter, coward, cad and hero, triumphs in this first instalment of The Flashman Papers. His adventures as the reluctant secret agent in Afghanistan and his entry into the exclusive company of Lord Cardigan's Hussars culminate in his foulest hour -- his part in the historic disaster of the Retreat from Kabul. This is the story of a blackguard who enjoyed villainy for its own sake. Shameless, exciting and funny, Flashman's deplorable odyssey is observed with the cynical eye of a scoundrel who was honest only in reporting what he saw. He makes all other black sheep look respectable grey.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Flashman!
Review of George MacDonald Fraser's "Flashman."

As a student and admirer of the Victorian Era and anything Anglophilic I have long awaited the day of purchasing and reading the published "Flashman Papers" from manuscript form.

I have seen Fraser's book advertised and critiqued for many years. I set my decision to delve into the book as sort of a guilty pleasure and I was not disappointed. If this genre interests you, then you should be quite pleasantly surprised.

The abstract from the book itself clearly tells the prospective purchaser what to expect: "Flashman follows Flashy as he lies, steals, duels, and wenches his way from 1839 England to India to the wilds of Afghanistan. Along the way, he survives military incompetence, ambushes, torture, ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent read
Only recently discovered GMF. Flashman is a great read. Hard to put down. I look forward to reading more Flashman adventures.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A "hero's" self deprecation always entertains
Oh, so refreshing to immerse oneself, coming out of
our hard edged world of self-serving, hype-drenched
prose into a comfortable divan of well conceived candor.
Bring more, if you will.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Adventure Begins...
I have just finished reading this little gem for the second time and find myself eager to express my gratitude for an author whose skils both prodigious and wide ranging.

Fraser is a masterful storyteller. In the cynical and totally believable Harry Flashman, (soldiier, adventurer. mercenary and total bastard!) the author paints a convincing portrait of an age long dead - warts and all.

Great historical detail, (both in its depiction of events and the attitudes that fostered them), evocative prose and a varied cast of well drawn characters (none more so than the cad at the novel's heart); all these elements combine to create a wonderful entertainment.

Don't be put off by the occasional disapproving reader. Good historical writing involves so much more ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A never erring sense of survival at all costs
I was unaware of the Flashman series till it became a subject of conversation on the Amazon Discussion Board. So, wondering what I was missing, I purchased the first in the series and plunged in. What I discovered was Flashman, a man who chose the military as his profession but spent most of his time and effort avoiding service. Duty, honor, country... Flashman would have none of it. Flashman, gives us the cynic's view of war and glory, which is the highest cause one can have in war is to escape it alive at all costs and all who think otherwise are chumps. It takes some fortitude to deal with the incredible cowardice, arrogance, snobbery, racism and sexism that Flashman embodies, but the writing of Mr. Fraser makes following Flashman's exploits a guilty pleasure and often extremely funny. ...
